A hobby is a regularly undertaken activity that is done for pleasure, typically, during one`s leisure time. Hobbies can include the collection of themed items and objects, engaging in creative and artistic pursuits, along with many more examples. By continually participating in a particular hobby, one can acquire substantial skill and knowledge in that area.

Generally speaking, a person who engages in an activity solely for fun is called an amateur (or hobbyist), as opposed to a professional who engages in an activity for remuneration, or pay. An amateur may be as skilled as a professional, the principle difference being that a professional receives compensation while an amateur does not.

Collecting

The hobby of collecting includes seeking, locating, acquiring, organizing, cataloging, displaying, storing, and maintaining whatever items are of interest to the individual collector. Some collectors are generalists, accumulating merchandise, or stamps from all countries of the world. Others focus on a subtopic within their area of interest, perhaps 19th century postage stamps, milk bottle labels from Sussex, or Mongolian harnesses and tack.

- Wolfgang Goethe loved to travel to outlying Weimer, his hometown, and scatter the seeds of violets. There are still the flowers, and the townspeople call them violets of Goethe

- Dmitry Mendeleev, the author of the periodic system, sewed bags, and many famous people made orders. And some of his famous neighbors knew him as a master of luggage sewing, not to the chemist.

- Leo Tolstoy plowed himself and sewed shoes.

- Beaumarchais was a good watchmaker.

- Leonardo da Vinci was an inventor and an excellent cook.

- Franklin Roosevelt gathered a huge collection of stamps, one of the largest in the world.

- HG Wells collected toy soldiers.

- Rembrandt bought a huge amount of luxury items – jewelry, weapons, and carpets.

- David Rockefeller has a huge collection of beetles. He has been collected them from his childhood.

- Yuriy Radzinsky has a collection of cigarette/cigar holders, smoking pipes and lighters.
